Data from REF NOTE#2 and his death cert. Per VT VRs at the time of his marriage to Lucinda he resided in Wilmington and listed his occupation as mechanic; the JP was a Henry Crosier. Two of his furniture pieces - a man's dresser and a woman's dresser/vanity- are in the possession of Marion and Hazel Wilkin in Williamstown MA. The following excerpt is taken from the Gazetteer and Business Directory of Bennington County VT for 1880-81 compiled / published by Hamilton Child Page 186 under the Town of Searsburg : "On the West Branch of [the] Deerfield River, near the north border of town, is the saw mill and bedstead factory of Mrs. Delia Hotchkins, of Troy N.Y., now operated by John H. Bellows, who employs about eight men in the manufacture of 200,000 feet of lumber and 1000 bedsteads annually." In the early 1900's he operated his own mill in Clarksburg just to the east of the North Branch of the Hoosac River and Rte. 8 in Briggsville. It was called the Red Mill and was situated on a small stream which supplied water power. At some time his widowed daughter Catherine Nichols and her children lived in a nearby house on the edge of the river which they heated with the maple scraps and rejects from the mill.(recollections of R.W.W.Nichols). |

From: Chronicle Express, Penn Yan, New York, April 7, 1949. Funeral services for Mrs. Emma Whitney of Gorham, who at 97 was probably the oldest resident of this immediate area, were conducted from the Gorham Baptist church March 18, 1949. Mrs. Whitney was born in the town of Seneca, Ontario county, on the farm now owned by Howard Sprague and moved to Michigan with here parents, Jefferson and Melen Blodgett Crosier, attending school in Battle Creek, Mich. Near the close of the Civil war, in 1865, the family moved to this area again and for four years in the 1870's, taught school in the Gorham vicinity. In 1875 she married Sherman Whitney of Flint Creek, and the began housekeeping on the farm of the bride's father three miles out of Gorham on the Rushville road. Mr. and Mrs Whitney took their two sons and went to California about 1889, operating a fruit ranch at El Cajon. Returning to Hall, they lived there until Mr. Whitney died about 17 years ago. For many, many years she was a member of the Embroidery circle at Hall and in latter years, when she could no longer manage the tiny beautiful stitches for which she was long famous, the Circle still honored her with flowers on special occasions and insisted that she attend as frequently as possible. While her husband was alive, both were members of the Grange and attended Grange "doings" faithfully, although Mrs. Whitney frequently commented that the part she remembered the most vividly was the stacks and stacks of dirty dishes that had to be washed after every meal. She was the oldest living member of the Gorham Baptist Church and here again she often remarked that while she didn't belong to any "fancy organizations," if there had even been a dishwasher's organization "I surely would have belonged to that." She was active in church work just as long as her health permitted. During the later years of her life while she was making her home with Miss Emma Swarthout at Gorham she gave up church attendance because of physical inability. For many years the annual Crosier family picnic was the highlight of her life as it brought together again the members of the family who had drifted apart. Survivors are a son, William A. J. Whitney of 58 Columbus avenue, Buffalo; a grandson, Dr. George C. Whitney of Geneva; two great-grandsons, George C. III. and James, both of Geneva. Another son, Dr. George C. Whitney, also a physician, died in 1922, in Rochester. Funeral services were held in the Gorham Baptist church on Friday afternoon, with Rev. Clyde Hurlbutt, pastor, officiating. Burial was made in Gorham cemetery. |
