CHARLEMONT - Herbert Henry Fitzroy, 85, of Charlemont, MA passed away peacefully on November 6, 2015 surrounded by his family.
Herb was born on November 2, 1930 in Ansonia, CT to Alton Parker Fitzroy, Sr. and Irene Bell Phelps. He spent his childhood years growing up in the Lee and Stockbridge, MA area. As a teenager he lived in Hawley, MA and graduated from Charlemont High School.
He started his working career as an owner/operator in the trucking business, then opened and managed the H & R Market in Charlemont before going to work for Swifts Meat Co. in Greenfield, MA as a butcher and salesman. He began his journey to working in the nuclear power industry where he spent the majority of his career by starting as a groundskeeper for New England Power Company at the Reservoir in Wilmington, VT. From there he studied and advanced himself by passing the licensing exams to become a Control Room Operator and Shift Supervisor for the Rowe Atomic Plant in Rowe, MA where he worked for 10 yrs. Herb then moved his family to West Chesterfield, NH after transferring to Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Plant in Vernon, VT where he worked another 10 yrs until he retired in 1981 at the age of 51. He then moved back to Charlemont.
In his retirement years he held a variety of jobs to keep active ranging from small engine repair to consultant for ENPRO, to driving school bus and finally to purchasing and operating equipment to mow roadsides for Charlemont and many neighboring towns. He retired for good in 1995 to enjoy spending time with family.
Herb enjoyed many outdoor activities throughout his lifetime - hunting, fishing, camping, snowmobiling, boating, off-roading with his Willy's Jeep and riding his BMW motorcycle. He loved dancing, especially square-dancing and attended many local dances with his family. He was an avid vegetable gardener. He donated some of his time to the Council of Aging in his latter years. He cherished spending time with family and friends.
Herb married Ruth Marion McHaffie on March 20, 1948 and they were blessed with four children. They enjoyed many happy years together until her passing in 1982. He was blessed to marry his second wife, Flora (Hall) Stetson on January 8, 1983. His family grew with the addition of his 3 stepchildren and his brother-in-law who lived with them. They spent time traveling to Florida and Tennessee and came to enjoy a few trips to Mohegan Sun.
He was pre-deceased by his Mother and Father, his first wife Ruth, his brother Alton of Charlemont, his sister Elizabeth Gray of Chadwicks, NY and his brother-in-law Guy John Hall.
Herb is survived by his second wife Flora, son Robert Fitzroy and his wife Kim of Charlemont, daughters Cinni and her husband Ivan Donovan of Hawley, MA, Dawn and her husband John Hope, Jr. of Keene, NH and Brenda and her husband Nelson Lanoue of Charlemont, MA, step-daughter Roberta and her husband Rick Rivera of New Orleans, LA, step-son Francis Stetson, Jr. and his wife Cathy and step-daughter Pamela Burke, all of Florida. He will be greatly missed by his 6 grandchildren Melanie, Jennifer, Sarah, Jeremy, Becky and Danny; his 11 step-grandchildren Laura, Alana, Sean, Kristi, Becky, Dean, Donald, Mandy, Francis, Christopher and Nicholas; as well as many beloved great grandchildren and step great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Shirley Snep of Creve Coeur, MO, Linda Lee and her husband Jeff Raymond of Plymouth, CT and his brother-in-law Leonard Hall of Dover, VT.
Calling hours will be Wednesday, November 11th from 6 to 8 p.m. at Johnson's Funeral Home in Shelburne Falls, MA. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, November 12th at 11 a.m. at Leavitt Cemetery in East Charlemont, MA.
In lieu of flowers a donation may be made in Herb's memory to the Charlemont Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 139, Charlemont, MA 01339 or to a charity of your choice .
