Published in Brattleboro Reformer from Jan. 25 to Jan. 26, 2007 Annette I. (Howard) Davis, 95, of 31 Haynes Road died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2007, at the Centers For Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington after a brief illness. She was born in Wilmington on Nov. 19, 1911, the daughter of John and Ethel (Hicks) Howard. As a child, she spent her days walking barefoot through the great pine stands on Higley Hill, helping her father tend the farm animals and having adventures at the abandoned Miller Farm. She attended the one-room Fitch School on Higley Hill Road. She married Lawrence F. Davis on Dec. 17, 1927, in Wilmington. Together they raised four children. Mr. Davis predeceased her on Dec. 16, 1980. Mrs. Davis will be remembered as a simple woman who loved her family and the outdoors. Her time was spent in her large vegetable gardens, tending her flower beds, cutting firewood with her "buck saw," and taking winter walks with her ski pole in hand and "creepers" on her feet. She is survived by a sister, Jane Howard of Barre; her children, Gene and Ruth Davis, Bernice Sullivan, George and Virginia Davis, all of Wilmington, and Michael and Jill Davis of Marstons Mills, Mass.; 11 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Her brother, Paul Howard, three sisters, Dorothy Waite, Alice Brassor, and Gertrude Bartlett, and a son-in-law, Kenneth Sullivan, predeceased her. Funeral services will be held at the COVEY & ALLEN FUNERAL HOME, 44 East Main St., on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Marcia Dorey, pastor of the Wilmington Congregational Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Davis family lot in the Riverview Cemetery. There are no calling hours. A memorial gathering will follow the committal services at the home of Matthew and Laurie Cole. Should friends desire, gifts in memory of Mrs. Davis may be made to either the Wilmington Firefighters Association or Deerfield Valley Rescue, in care of the Covey & Allen Funeral Home, P.O. Published in Brattleboro Reformer on Mar. 10, 2008 Doris Howe Adams 1916 - 2008 WILMINGTON Doris Howe Adams, 92, a longtime resident of Higley Hill Road, died Saturday morning, March 8,2008, at the Eden Park Nursing Home in Brattleboro, where she had resided the past few years. Born in West Dover on Feb. 13,1916, daughter of Ernest and Rosa Scranton Howe, she received her education in Wilmington schools and was a 1934 graduate of Wilmington High School. She and her husband, Louis, ran the family farm, "Adams Farm", for many years. Mrs. Adams was one of the first in the area to establish a bed and breakfast which originally catered to the summer visitors and eventually the skiers who came after Mount Snow was established. She had also worked as a caregiver in earlier years, being quite active with the running of the farm, she enjoyed keeping honey bees and was a member of The Neighborhood Club which consisted of area farmers getting together to discuss farming operations. She was a longtime member and former treasurer of the Wilmington Baptist Church, its Lord's Acre group which supported the church, and the Baptist Evening Guild. A 4-H leader in sewing and cooking, she served as the superintendent of the Youth Building at the Annual Deerfield Valley Farmers Day Fair and a member of The Higley Hill Homemakers. Mrs. Adams enjoyed traveling, sewing, quilting, hooking, knitting, gardening and snowmobiling. She looked forward to the bowling league she played in with her sisters and the family get togethers each month. Her husband, Louis Adams, whom she married sept. 30, 1938, died July 6, 1997. She leaves her son and daughter-in-law, William and Sharon Adams; daughters, Thelma Boyd, Shirley Pease and husband, Robert Pease, all of Wilmington, and Ruby Bailey and husband, Thomas Bailey, of El Paso, Texas; a stepson, Bertram "Pete" Adams and wife, Betty, stepdaughter, Sally and husband Merrill Mundell, all of Wilmington; a sister, Lillian Closson of Northfield, Mass.; a sister-in-law, Edith Batchelder of Wilmington; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two great-great -grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a daughter, Judy Adams, who died Feb. 1, 1947; by brothers, Harold, Jasper, Francis and Morton Howe, and by sisters, Zella Morgan, Agnes Atherton and Vivian Glover. FUNERAL NOTICE: Services will be held Tuesday, March 11, at 2 p.m. at the COVEY & ALLEN FUNERAL HOME with the Rev. Douglas LaPlant, pastor of the Wilmington Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the family lot in Intervale Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Adams Farm immediately following the graveside services. All are invited.
