Deerfield Valley News , Wilmington, Vt. 2009 - Peter "Pete" John Baptiste Maynard died on June 10 at his Castle Heights home with his family by his side. He was born at home September 23, 1934 in Wilmington. He was the youngest child of Eleoda "Leo" Maynard and Mary Almira Buffum and attended the local elementary schools. He graduated from Wilmington High School in 1952 having played basketball and baseball under the coaching of Joseph Roberge. At UVM, he played on the baseball team, was a member of the ROTC while majoring in agriculture, and worked on the UVM farm. He served in the Air Force as a pilot and, while stationed in the Philippines, worked in M.A.T.S. After his honorary discharge from the Air Force, he stopped in Detroit to pick up his new Ford Galaxy. He worked at G S Precision until 1969 when he started teaching at Whitingham High School. While teaching industrial arts at Whitingham High School, he coached basketball, baseball, and was senior advisor for most of his 21 years. He also enjoyed being involved with graduations and "Project Graduation." Mr. Maynard had a natural ability and love for teaching and coaching which extended beyond his more than 20 years at Whitingham High School. His strong and quiet character touched the lives of many throughout the years. His passion for nature and the land showed in the raising of cattle or sheep: growing beautiful gardens including raspberries, potatoes, and tomatoes; and "getting up" his winter woodpile. Whether gardening, haying, fishing, or quietly observing nature, you could always find Mr. Maynard enjoying the outdoors. His hunting evolved into a keen eye behind the video camera. Mr. Maynard leaves his wife and friend Harriet (Allen) whom he married June 5, 1965; his daughters, Michelle and Heather; son-in-law Paul Crosier; and grandson Eli Peter; his brothers and sisters, Vera Deyo, of Brattleboro; Allison and Audrey Maynard, of Virginia Beach, VA; Jackie Bradley, of Framingham, MA; Roger and Barbara Maynard, of Wilmington; Reginald and Elaine Maynard, of Whitingham; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family who will truly miss this steady, caring man. His large family and close angler friends are left with an emptiness, but will carry in their hearts many wonderful memories of Mr. Maynard. |
