[houghtling.FTW] Hannah died at Watervliet, Ny and is buried in the Shaker Cemetery at Watervliet, NY. Watervliet was the first permanent settlement founded by "Mother" Ann Lee in 1774, who died at the community in 1784 and is buried in a local cemetery. Originally inspired by a vision which convinced her she was the human incarnation of Christ's femininity, Lee drew thousands to the Shaker movement by the strength of her personality and appeal of Shaker convictions, chasity, morality and equality for all. The largest community was at Mt. Lebanon, New Lebanon, NY. It was established in 1787 and served as the mother community. In 1850, Shakerism was at the height of its popularity with a membership of 6000 from Maine and Kentucky. |
Note N5110 :
[houghtling.FTW] In 1802, David took his wife, Hannah, and his minor children to the Shaker community at Watervliet, Ny. It is uncertain whether he remained at that time. He did become an Elder of the community and signed the Covenant i 1814. In 1819 he was made leader of one of the "Families" at Watervliet. In 1822, he fell down some stairs and was severely injured. After that there was no mention of him in the Shaker records and he is not buried in the Shaker Cemetery at Watervliet. David and Hannah were "of Phillipston" and were said to have "united with the community at Lebanon". David is believed to be the 80-90 year old male in Levi and Lydia Culver's (son-in-law and daughter) household in the 1830 census of Stephentown, New York. |
