IN MEMORY OF OUR SHIPMATES WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN THE LINE OF DUTY ON BOARD THE USS SEARCHER

 

On Sunday November 13, 1955 at 0412 the SEARCHER deck log reported a fire in the engine room.  The general alarm was sounded.  Initial reports stated that the hydraulic system controlling steering was ruptured.  At 0547 a secondary explosion was reported in the vicinity of the engine room.  At 0600 the engine room was completely evacuated.  At 0602 all fire main pressure was lost.  It was determined that the explosion occurred in the starboard fuel tank.
