Note N5801 :
Gazette & Courier - Monday, July 14, 1873 (Halifax Vt.) On the eve. of the Fourth, James Crosier tried to persuade his son-in-law William Smith , from using harsh language toward his family, whereupon the younger seized the elder and threw him outrageously about the premises, while in turn it is supposed Crosier seized a gun, containing shot, and fired its contents into Smith's right breast, who immediately left the house and walked a few rods and expired. Crosier gave himself up to the authorities and was placed under $2000 bonds for his appearance at the next county Court. This sad calamity ought to teach us all, that we cannot have our thoughts too pure, or our actions too good for present peace and happiness, letting alone the future. The funeral services of the deceased were held at the Center; upwards of 200 persons were present. Mr. Fowler, the officiating clergyman, preached am impressive sermon to the living people - the audience. . |
