GREEN, SAMUEL, was the first of the family of this name who settled in Leicester, and may be considered the Nestor of' this little community. The part of the town where he settled is now called Greenville. He was born in Malden, 1670; and came to Leicester, a few months, it is believed, before Mr. Denny and the Southgates. He married Elizabeth Upham, dau. of the ancestor of the early families of that name in Leicester; and had Elizabeth, b. 1693; m. Thomas Richardson, an early settler in Leicester. Rebekah, b. 1695; m. Samuel Baldwin of Leicester. Ruth, m. Joshua Nichols of Leicester. Thomas, b. 1699. Lydia, m. Abiathar Vinton; and afterwards Samuel Stower, who came from Malden to Leicester. Barsheba, m. Elisha Newers. Abigail, m. Henry King of Leicester. Anna, m. Ebenezer Lamb. That he was regarded as a man of intelligence and worth, is shown by the early action of the town. At the first recorded meeting of the inhabitants, he was chosen first selectman, moderator, first assessor, and grand juror; and he continued to hold offices of trust and responsibility in the town as long as he lived. He early became a proprietor of the township; and was one of the committee of the proprietors, in 1722-3, to select the half which should be conveyed to the settlers, and to convey the same. This he did in 1724. In that deed he is named as proprietor of lots No. 28-31, two mill-lots, and one other mill-lot in connection with his son-in-law, Thomas Richardson. He afterwards purchased the whole of this lot, and erected a gristmill and the first sawmill in the town upon them, upon the site on which the mills in Greenville now stand. In 1727, he was the owner of nine hundred and twenty-nine acres of land in the town. He was the first captain of the first military company raised in the town; an honorable mark of distinction, which is carefully recognized in all documents and records afterwards in which he is named. He built and occupied the house opposite the Baptist Meeting-house in Greenville; and continued to be a leading man in the town until his death, Jan. 2, 1736, at the age of sixty-five. The influence of the character and example of the first settlers of such a town, upon the little community growing up around them, is often felt through successive generations; and, among those to whom the town of Leicester owed its progress and character, the memory of Capt. Green ought ever to be held in grateful respect. Source: http://www.accessgenealogy.com/massachusetts/leicester/green.htm |

Tim Davis had John Franklin Davis as Franklin F. Davis. Bette/Lisa Davis - Jan 19, 2001 I have tried to send an email with this information directly to news, but have not been sucessful. This is just a summary of information about John. Facts, with a bit of supposition thrown in! Born c. 1837-39 in Vt or Mass Married (?) Sarah Ann Lee in 1857. They had two sons (known), George b. Sept 1862, d.Feb. 28, 1876. John Franklin b. 1865 (have more information on John from Betha Ackley). Had a relationship with a Sally Gray they had one son known Charles b. Oct 1874 (North Adams?) d. Feb 21, 1876. Might be two sons Willie (William?) b. 1881 (9 years old in 1880 census). What happened to Sally? What happened to Willie? John served in the Union Army, Company K, NY 5th Heavy Artillary. Was promoted to Corporal. John Married (?) Sarah Munroe Johnston (Bailey?) C. 1875. Two sons Chester Frederick b. 1877 and Asa James b. 1882. (based on information from Asa's 1st marriage certificate.) Sarah died March 30, 1885. John Married Cloe (Clory) Jenners in April 1886. Both Sarah Ann and Cloe applied for John"s pension when he died. Cloe was the recipient (because of proof of marriage?) what happened to Asa? who raised him? Only 2-3 when his mother died, 13 when John died Sept 21, 1895. Things indicated by information in pension and other records. John and his families traveled back and forth from North Adams area to Port Leyden, Ny area. John use dhis middle name as much (maybe more than) as his first name. To the extent that some people knew him only as Frank, or Franklin. Indicated by the paper's death Announcment of his Children and his death certificate. Also the Census records of 1860. Things I would like to accomplish which hopefully would clarify some confusion. Locate birth records for Willie, Fred, Asa. (Lyonsdale, maybe?0 Locate birth records for Charles. Marriage records for 2 Sarahs, Clory.(any or all "wives") Death records for Sarah Munroe. Death records for Sally Gray. Above by Elizabeth Jean Davis The following by Tim Davis Name: John Franklin DAVIS Sex: M ALIA: Franklin F. /Davis/ Birth: 1838 in Pownal, Vermont 1 Death: 21 JUL 1895 in Clarksburg, Mass. 2 of Heart Disease. Marriage fact: 5 AUG 1862 Enlisted for 3 years in Civil War. Leydon, Lewis County, NY. Fact 2: 11 SEP 1862 Mustered in Company K 5th Regiment Heavy Artillery. Fact 3: 26 JUN 1865 Discharged Corpal, Mustered out at Harpers Ferry, W. Virginia. 3 Fact 4: Occupation: Farmer Fact 5: 13 APR 1892 Registered to vote in Clarksburg, Mass. 2 Burial: UNKNOWN Most likely buried near his Parents Corner of Cross and Horrigan roads in Clarksburg, Mass. Reference Number: 613 Medical Information: Eyes: Brown; Hair: Dark; Complexion: Light. Note: John was married at least three times. There is some confusion about these wives. This is what I think: I believe he first married Sarah A. Roberts in Little Falls, NY. (She is also known as Sarah A. Lee,in a document that was filed after John died, the information in this document was supplied by a Harlow M. Lee. I think that perhaps he may have married Sarah A. Roberts Davis, or it was a simple mistake he supplied his surname in place of hers. Or there is the remote chance that she used an alias when she married John. ), He lived with her until the civil war. he joined in 1862 and was discharged 6-1865 afterwards he went back to Port Leydon continued his life with her for a short time,They had two sons together, then "Ran Off" with a Sally Grey. I think it is possible that Sally Grey may also have been known as Sarah M., if not at some point he met Sarah M., to whom he apparently was married she being his second wife, and bearing two or three sons. She died 3-30-1885,( A couple of gentlemen stated in 1895 that Sarah M. was his first and only wife, however one of these gentlemen was 37 years old and the other was only 30, and may have not been old enough to know that he was indeed married once before.) after which he then married a Cloe Jenners in Lyonsdale, NY 4-12-1886. I don't know or have any evidence that there were any children from this union. She died in 1915. The pension papers from the National Archives was mailed to me by Elizabeth Davis, and is where most of the above information was ascertained from. A couple of problems or mysteries, 1) Sarah M. is believed to be the mother of Asa James Davis, but according to these records she died before he was born. Or the date of Asa's Birth is wrong. I have 1885, But according to Elizabeth she said it stated his birth as 1882 on his first marriage certificate. 2) We have records that indicate he was married to a Sarah Bailey or Johnston and that there were children one was Chester Frederick Davis, but he was born 1877 about the same time as we find him with Sarah M., in Clarksburg,Mass., and about the same time another son was born, Fred. It is possible I think that Fred and Chester Frederick are also one and the same. Father: Daniel N.
