The 1910 census for Adams, MA shows John being 48 in 1910 which would make his birth date abt 1862. It also says that he immigrated to Americain 1891. (The 1930 census has him immigrated in 1889.) It lists his wife as Mary. Mary (Marianna died in 1903 so spouse should have been Tekla. The census lists children living at home as Joseph (14), Brunak (13) AKA Bruno, Frank (11), Bolek (5) - this has to be William, Lucy (2), Genka (1), and Anna (1 month). It does not mention Tekla as wife even though Anna, William, and Genka are children of 2nd wife Tekla. . The 2010 census says born in Austria-Poland. Before WW1, Poland did not exist as a country and the area was subdivided into Russia-Poland, Prussia-Poland, Austria-Poland etc. When he came to America he spoke only Polish. John immigrated on March 5th, 1891 on the ship Moravia, which sailed from Hamburg, Germany to New York. He first settled in Brattleboro, VT then moved to the Wheeler farm in Whitingham, VT to work the farm for Mr. Wheeler. He then bought a farm in Cheshire, Mass on Notch Road where he raised all his children. His wife Marianna age 31 and their son Alexander age 9 departed from Hamburg, Germany about 4 years later on Jan. 13, 1895 and arrived in New York on Jan. 29, 1895 aboard the SS Phoenicia. No records found yet on their children Antoni and Stanislawa who would have been age 7 and 5 when Marianna came to America. The 1900 census of Whitingham, VT shows John Poplaski with a brother Frank living with him born in 1872 in Poland/Russia. It also lists John's birth date as Aug. 1866. It states that John was born in Poland-Russia. It also states that John and Mary were married for 16 years as of the date of the 1900 census which was June, 15, 1900 U.S. Naturalization Record Indexes, 1791-1992 (Indexed in World Archives Project) Record for John PoplaskiU.S. Naturalization Record Indexes, 1791-1992 (Indexed in World Archives Project) From Ancestry.com John Poplaski, from Whitingham, VT, was naturalized on Aug, 24, 1896. The court document Volume 15, Page 50, US District Court, Burlington, VT shows John being born in Russia in 1865. The whitness was O.R. Chase of Whitingham, VT His naturalization papers list him as John Poplaski. His oldest son Alexander went by the spelling Poplawski. And Alexander raised his children as Poplawski so it is assumed John dropped the W when he was naturalized. On Jan Poplawski son Leon's birth certificate (mother Tekla) it states Jan was born in "Pizzanow" Poland. This has to be a wrong spelling for Perzanow which is a small village described below. Perzanowo is a village in the administrative district of Gmina Czerwonka, within Maków County, Masovian Voivodeship, in east-central Poland. It lies approximately 3 kilometres south-east of Czerwonka, 11 km east of Maków Mazowiecki, and 76 km north of Warsaw. The Polish Genealogy website https://geneteka.genealodzy.pl shows Jan's last name spelled wrongl as Peplowski only once referencing his marriage to Marianna Rudnicka in 1886 in Czerwonka, Poland. This is proven by the fact that Marianna's death certificate shows her father as Roch Rudnicki and the marriage entry of Jan and Marianna also lists her father as Roch Rudnicki. All other entries of Jan that were found in the https://geneteka.genealodzy.pl website lists his name as Poplawski. |
