Deerfield Valley News WHITINGHAM- Elaine France Maynard, of Whitingham, and Wicomico Church, VA, died on Sunday, September 26, at her home in Virginia. She was born on June 19, 1926 in Elizabeth, NJ, daughter of the late Mona and Casmir France. As a child, her family maintained a summer home in Whitingham, and throughout her life she and her husband and family spent considerable time in Whitingham.
After graduation from Bryn Mawr College, Mrs. Maynard worked for a few years in St. Louis, MO, doing clinical psychology with children. On July 17, 1954, she married Reginald Leo Maynard in Whitingham.
For 50 years beginning in World War II, Mrs. Maynard volunteered with the Red Cross, the last six years of which she held the position of director of the Concord, MA, chapter.
Surviving are her husband of 56 years; her children, Gregory B. Maynard, of Gardnerville, NV, and Karen D. Maynard, of Brattleboro; two grandchildren, Emily and Tyler Maland; son-in-law, James B. Maland of Brattleboro; and sister, Evelyn (Susie) France Kalager of DeLand, FL, and Kunkletown, PA. A memorial service will be held at the Whitingham Community Church on Sunday, November 7, at 1 pm.

PITTSFIELD -- Andrew Frank Rice, 59, of 5 Chatham St. died Friday in the emergency room at Berkshire Medical Center after suffering an apparent heart attack while at work at Cranwell Resort in Lenox earlier in the morning.
Born in Pittsfield on April 11, 1945, son of Stanley E. and Ann L. Barber Rice, he graduated in 1964 from Pittsfield High School.
He served in the Navy Reserve.
Mr. Rice had been employed as a carpenter at Cranwell for three years. He previously had worked in the engineering department at the Crowne Plaza for nine years, and in GE's power transformer division for several years.
He was a communicant of St. Charles' Church. He was an avid fisherman and Red Sox fan, and enjoyed playing horseshoes and cribbage. He had been active with Boy Scout Troop 20 at Sacred Heart Church; the troop had once named him its "mayor of the day."
He and his wife, the former Ellen M. Furey, were married May 26, 1972, in Richmond.
Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Alison M. Kogut of Readsboro, Vt., and Leah M. Rice of Pittsfield; four brothers, Stanley E. Rice of Minot, N.D., Robert T. Rice and George E. Rice, both of Florence, and David J. Rice of Belchertown; a sister, Patricia A. Rice of Apex, N.C., and three grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Andrew F. Rice, 59, who died May 21, 2004, will be Thursday at 9:15 from DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 at St. Charles' Church by the Rev. Peter A. Gregory, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Wednesday from 4 to 7. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in his memory be made to the American Heart Association or to the Shriners, both in care of the funeral home. Mr. Rice was a man who loved his family and grandchildren, and who enjoyed life to the fullest. He is lovingly survived by his grandchildren Kaylee Wilcox, Connor Kogut and Baby Sammy.
