This article in the the North Adams Transcript Sept. 20, 2002 titled "RENAISSANCE WOMAN" Donna Roberts, North Adams Transcript Friday, September 20, 2002 - CHESHIRE -- She writes, directs, sings, crochets, and has even cared for Norman Rockwell. Rosalie Poplaski, 72, is a modern-day Renaissance woman. Although confinement to a wheelchair with arthritis in her knees and a right knee replacement has altered her life slightly, Poplaski said she remains active. Two published poems, a couple of copy-written songs, and a room full of crafts and ceramic figures is plenty proof of that. "The wheelchair has slowed me down a bit," she said. "But I can't just sit in front of the TV 24/7, so I do different things to keep me busy." Along with her artistic talents, Poplaski is also a self-taught musician, who used to play the accordion, guitar, and piano. Combining lesson books with "learning by ear," this talent complemented her flair for producing variety shows at a young age, which led to larger productions at the St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Cheshire. "I began doing those kinds of shows at age 13 with the neighbors," she said. "I used to write songs, sing in a band, and put on all these productions." Poplaski has directed eight variety shows for church benefits, many with country western themes. Music has always been a part of her life, said Poplaski, since her parents and grandparents would often sing together. "My father was the most beautiful bass singer and my mother would sing with him," she said. "There was always a lot of music in the house. My grandparents would come to the house and we'd all harmonize oldies tunes." Poplaski also said one of her aunts had a chance to sing for the Metropolitan Opera, but never took the opportunity. "She had such a gorgeous voice," she said. "Whenever she sang my brother, Dick, would always cry." Aside from her musical talents, Poplaski has also written two poems, "When You Were With Me" and "That's what life is all about," which have been published by The International Library of Poetry. "I never took any writing course -- like the songs, they just come to me," she said. "They're mostly tear-jerkers." Poplaski also sent a third poem she wrote to Jacqueline Kennedy after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. "I was so glad it got to her," she said of the response she later received. Although she can't remember how it started, Poplaski also writes letters to another published author, Trio Russo of Lawrence, who dedicated one of his collections of poetry to her. "I think he got me started with publishing poems," she said. "We've never met, but we've been writing to each other for about four years now. I really can't go out there to see him, but I think it's better this way. It leaves a little mystery." After working in various mills throughout her lifetime ("every one I worked at closed down!" she said), Poplaski graduated from the Charles H. McCann nursing program in her mid-30s. She worked at the Berkshire Medical Center until 1975, where she took care of Rockwell a year before she left. "He was a patient of mine, and one day he asked me for a piece of paper," she said. "So I gave him one and he drew me a little picture and thanked me for my help. It was so unexpected!" Poplaski said she also cared for one of the Broadway musical duo Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II for about a day, although she couldn't remember which one. "Old age will do that to you," she said. "Isn't it awful?" Originally from North Adams, Poplaski lived in Adams for a time, where she met her husband, Edmund, a Cheshire native. They were married for 46 years when he died in 1994 from asbestos poisoning after working at General Electric for 29 years. A popular man among all who knew him, Poplaski said they met when he "tooted his horn" at her on Park Street. "He just started flirting with me, and then asked me out," she said. "He used to pick me up in an old Studebaker to go to dances. We met in May, were engaged in September, and got married in October." She said her favorite memories of him, besides their fishing trips to Lake Champlain every weekend, were snowmobiling with friends. "About eight or 10 neighbors would gather here and we'd go out riding -- I loved it," she said. "For New Year's Eve, we'd go up on the mountain and have a big fire and roast hot dogs and drink cider. We had so much fun." Although those days have dwindled down to a few precious memories, Poplaski said she will keep busy with bingo once a week, her crafts, and her writing, for as long as she's physically able. "When it stops, it stops," she said. Poplaski has one daughter, Linda, and three grandchildren, Allan, 32, Jennifer, 29, and Jillian, 19.
